European roulette rules
The wheel holds the numbers 1 to 36, half red and half black, plus one green zero. You place chips on the table, the croupier spins, and every bet that covers the winning number is paid.
Inside bets cover a few numbers and pay more: a straight up pays 35 to 1, a split 17 to 1, a street 11 to 1, a corner 8 to 1, a six line 5 to 1. Outside bets cover 12 or 18 numbers: columns and dozens pay 2 to 1, red, black, even, odd, 1-18 and 19-36 pay 1 to 1.
Zero is the house advantage. It is not red, not black, not even or odd, so every outside bet loses when it comes up. Over 37 spins a number pays 35 times the stake on average once, while 36 would be a fair price: that gap is the 2.70% edge, identical for every bet on the table.
European or American roulette?
The American wheel adds a second green pocket, the double zero, and keeps the same payouts. One extra losing pocket almost doubles the house edge, from 2.70% to 5.26%. Whenever you have the choice, the single-zero wheel is the better table.
Call bets on the European wheel
Call bets cover a section of the wheel rather than a block of the table. They are placed with one tap next to the wheel, chip by chip as a croupier would.
- Neighbours of zero: 17 numbers from 22 to 25, 9 chips.
- Thirds of the wheel: 12 numbers from 27 to 33, 6 chips.
- Orphans: the 8 numbers left over, 5 chips.
- Zero spiel: 7 numbers from 12 to 15, 4 chips.
