The goal

Guess where the ball will stop. You bet on one number or a group of numbers before the spin; if the winning number is in your group, you are paid at that bet’s odds.

The wheel and the table

A European wheel has 37 pockets: 1 to 36, half red and half black, and one green zero. An American wheel adds a double zero for 38 pockets. The table repeats the numbers in three columns of twelve, with the outside boxes around them.

How a round runs

  1. Bets are open: players place chips on the table.
  2. The dealer spins the wheel and launches the ball.
  3. “No more bets”: the table closes a few seconds before the ball slows.
  4. The ball settles; the dealer marks the number and clears losing bets.
  5. Winning bets are paid, then a new round opens.

The zero rules: La Partage and En Prison

On a standard table the zero wipes every outside bet. French tables soften it on even-money bets. With La Partage you get half the stake back; with En Prison the bet stays locked for one more spin and is returned if it wins. Both cut the edge on those bets from 2.70% to 1.35%.

Table limits

Every table has a minimum and a maximum bet. The maximum is what stops doubling systems such as the martingale: after enough losses in a row, the next doubled bet is simply not allowed.

European, French and American roulette

  • European: one zero, 37 pockets, 2.70% edge on every bet.
  • French: the European wheel plus La Partage or En Prison, 1.35% on even-money bets.
  • American: zero and double zero, 38 pockets, 5.26% edge, 7.89% on the top line bet.

Roulette rules: questions

Does the dealer have to announce “no more bets”?

Yes, in land casinos. Online, the betting time is a countdown that closes the table automatically.

Is La Partage the same as En Prison?

They give the same 1.35% edge. La Partage refunds half at once; En Prison keeps the full bet for one more spin.

Which roulette rules are best for the player?
