Jacks or Better machines differ only by what they pay for a full house and a flush, and that is what the two numbers mean. The full-pay 9/6 returns 99.54% with perfect play. The 8/5 found on many casino floors returns 97.30%: a house edge of 2.70%, almost six times the 0.46% of a 9/6.

Jacks or Better strategy: the rules that matter

The coach computes the exact expected return of all 32 ways to hold a hand. These are the rules it confirms most often, each checked on a real hand. Figures are the expected return per coin bet, 5 coins.

Break a made flush or straight for four to a royal flush: 19.6 per coin expected, against 6 for the flush and 4 for the straight.
Four to a straight flush beats a high pair: 3.64 against 1.54.
Keep a high pair alone, without a high kicker: 1.54 against 1.42 with the ace.
A high pair beats three to a royal flush: 1.54 against 1.49.
Four to a flush beats a low pair: 1.21 against 0.82.
A low pair beats four to an open straight (0.68) and two high cards (0.49).
With nothing, keep two high cards of the same suit (0.61); with no high card and no draw, throw all five away.
