How to read a payout

A payout of 35 to 1 means a 10 chip bet wins 350 and you keep your 10: 360 comes back to you. Casinos sometimes write it “36 for 1”, counting the stake in the total. The profit is the same.

Why every bet costs the same

Payouts are set as if the wheel had 36 pockets. On a European wheel there are 37, so every bet returns on average 36/37 of what you stake: a 2.70% house edge, whether you play one number or red. On an American wheel it is 36/38, or 5.26%.

The one exception is the American top line: five numbers paid 6 to 1, when 6.2 to 1 would be needed to match the rest. Its edge is 7.89%.
