How to play craps
- Put a chip on the Pass Line and roll. The first roll of a round is the come-out.
- On the come-out, 7 or 11 wins at once and 2, 3 or 12 (craps) loses. Any other total, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, becomes the point, and the white ON puck marks it.
- The shooter keeps rolling. The point before a 7 wins the Pass Line; a 7 first loses it. That is the seven out, and the hand is over.
- Once a point is set, add odds behind the line. They pay true odds, 2 to 1 on 4 and 10, 3 to 2 on 5 and 9, 6 to 5 on 6 and 8, with no house edge.
The rules of this table
- Odds up to 3x on 4 and 10, 4x on 5 and 9, 5x on 6 and 8; lay odds up to 6x on Don’t Pass and Don’t Come.
- Field: 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 pay 1 to 1, 2 pays 2 to 1 and 12 pays 3 to 1.
- Place bets and hardways stay on the table but are off on the come-out, like the odds on Come bets.
- A 12 on the come-out is a push for Don’t Pass and Don’t Come (the “bar”).
- Winning bets stay up and the winnings go to your balance. Take a bet down with the Take down button, or a right click.

Craps strategy: the cheapest bets
Craps has both the best and the worst bets in the casino, on the same table. The Pass Line costs 1.41% and the Don’t Pass 1.36%. The odds you add behind them cost nothing, so every chip you move from the line to the odds lowers what you pay: with full 3-4-5x odds, a Pass Line player gives up 0.37% of the total bet, and a Don’t Pass player laying 6x odds 0.27%.
Among the other bets, only Place 6 and Place 8 come close, at 1.52%. The Field costs 2.78%. The bets in the middle of the table are the dearest: 9% to 11% for the hardways and 11% to almost 17% for the one-roll bets, Any Seven being the worst at 16.67%.
Popular craps systems, measured
The Iron Cross covers the Field and Place 5, 6 and 8, so every total except 7 wins something: 30 rolls out of 36, 83% of the time. With 5 on the Field, 10 on the 5 and 12 each on the 6 and 8, a 7 takes all 39 at once, and the whole cross loses 0.36 per roll on average, 36 per 100 rolls. It wins often, but loses more than it wins.
The 3-Point Molly is a Pass Line and two Come bets, each with odds. Each bet costs the same 0.37% as the Pass Line with full odds, but three of them work at once, so three times as much money is at stake on every roll.
Craps odds: how often each total rolls
Two dice land 36 ways, and 7 is the most common total with 6 of them: one roll in six. That is why a 7 decides so much in craps. A shooter’s hand lasts 8.5 rolls on average, a point is made 40.6% of the time once it is set, and about 7 hands in 100 run to 20 rolls or more. The counter under the table compares your own rolls with these numbers.
